Competition 2025 – 10th Edition
Hugo Sinzheimer Moot Court Competition 2025
The Hugo Sinzheimer Moot Court Competition (HMCC) is a prestigious European-level moot court event dedicated to the field of European labour law. In the last 10 years, the competition provided a unique platform for law students to engage deeply with complex legal issues regarding employment and workers’ rights across the European Union.
Its namesake, the German legal scholar Hugo Sinzheimer (1875–1945), was instrumental in shaping the development of labour law in Europe and played a key role in drafting the Weimar Constitution. His legacy em phasizes the use of law as a tool for achieving social justice and protecting the rights of workers.
The competition is open to law students from universities across Europe, required to submit their written statements and to present oral arguments before a panel of Jury Judges. Each team argues both sides of a fictional legal dispute, assuming the roles of both claimant and defendant, thus gaining a comprehensive understanding of the case and its legal implications.
The primary focus of the competition is European labour law, encompassing themes such as labour mobility, employment rights, non-discrimination, collective bargaining, and broader issues of social justice within the context of EU law. Through this focus, the HMCC aims to deepen students‘ knowledge of European legal frameworks and encourage critical thinking about the protection of workers‘ rights, while enhancing students’ legal research, writing, and advocacy skills in an international and comparative legal context. It also fosters collaboration and dialogue among young legal minds from various European legal traditions, promoting cross-border academic exchange and professional development.
The HMCC is organized by a consortium of European universities and supported by prominent academic institutions and labour law associations.
For its milestone 10th edition, the organization was proudly supported by the European Labour Authorithy
